Defeat of Saviors
Anthony Gallery | Chicago, IL
Opening Reception: May 25, 2023
This body of works is following the title of Nikkolos’ previous show, “Survivalist”. The narrative was based on the idea of society using their profession as survival; their minds having to be creative and adaptive without specific trades or process.
This narrative then lead to describing how society is quick to use groups or religion in order to find a level of security and identity but later find that the social system is counter productive, thus leading to “Defeat of Saviors”.
In “Defeat of Saviors,” Nikkolos Mohammed explores the power of personal ephemera and the ways in which found objects can speak a universal language. His works are sculptural by nature, presented as mixed-media collages that use sports analogies to reference large scale social ideas and themes. These works encompass individual identities by disregarding outward traits, reflecting that people are complex and multidimensional. The artist leverages his works to confront both struggle and salvation in respect to expectations around Black masculinity and the layers of how one explores their identity.
