In 2016, The Metropolitan Museum of Art hosted a conversation between artist, Kerry James Marshall with William C. Rhoden, former New York Times columnist and author of the book, “Forty Million Dollar Slaves” in conjunction with Kerry James Marshall’s exhibition, “Mastry”. The conversation revolved around comparing the Black artist to the Black athlete. The two professions dance around the competition between finite idealism and imagination as an artform while dealing with capitol, especially in relation to its history to the American negro.
According to the interview with Kerry James Marshall with William C. Rhoden, art is more essential to life than sport, but relative to capital gain, grooming young Black athletes became more essential based on their need to survive and thrive in this society. So, it’s understood why my former teachers would encourage me to pursue sports, but as I continued to will myself into becoming an artist, I’m constantly discovering the connection with both professions. The artist and the athlete are fueled by survival and the expectation to innovate, breaking both capitol and idealistic barriers.
The act of survival IS innovation.
The survivalist IS an innovator.
